Scripture clearly indicates that when you support God, through churches and ministries that are blessed by God, you will receive blessings from God. (New Revised Standard Version) Deut. 28:1-14 Malachi 3:10-12 Matthew 10:41 Matthew 25:21 Luke 6:37-38 2 Cor. 9:6-8 Galatians 6:6-10 The Impact of Abuse The National Resources Council estimates up to 62% of the population has experienced some level of sexual abuse. About half of child sexual abuse survivors suffer extreme forms of psychiatric trauma and/or personality disorders. Although no published studies indicated how many survivors suffer significant to extreme spiritual trauma, there is clear evidence of supporting symptoms reported by counselors. Some of the symptoms include hating God, turning to Satan, prostitution, homosexuality, or playing cultic spiritual games to create an altered existence (e.g., Dungeons and Dragons), psychiatric disorders (eating disorders to dissociative disorders) or substance abuse. An article in “Child Abuse Prevention, #9, Autumn 1998” by Paul E. Mullen and Jillian Fleming entitled “Long-term Effects of Child Sexual Abuse” quoted Bagley and Ramsey (1986) stating that those with histories of child sexual abuse tended to have lower status economic roles…and found work histories that placed them in the lowest socioeconomic status categories. (Mullen et al, 1994). They were also more likely to have partners …in the lowest socioeconomic groups. Those who suffered more severe physically abusive forms of sexual abuse were four times more likely to be in the lowest socioeconomic group than those who were not as severely abused. In addition, the decline in socioeconomic status could not be accounted for by educational failure or a reduced participation in the work force. The only explanation was that they underestimated their value and abilities (a failure of self-esteem), and/or they were less adept at translating training …into effective function in the work sphere. All of this suggests a wide range of disruption of function that is particularly marked in those reporting the more severe abuse experiences. Biblical Counseling View At Biblical Counseling, we depend on The Holy Spirit’s direction (John 16:13) for each individual and situation. Finally, the Lord is the counselor and He counsels each of us: Psalm 33:11, 73:24; and Isaiah 9:6. The Lord counsels us to bear one another’s burdens: Galatians (1-2) Finally, the Lord also directs us to seek counsel and He tells of the benefits of accepting counsel: Proverbs 11:14, 13:10, and 19:20.
